Nail Clipping
Regular nail trimming is essential for pets, especially for indoor and elderly animals. Outdoor pets may naturally wear their nails down. The need for trimming varies by breed, age, exercise, and environment. Active working or herding breeds, especially on hard surfaces, may not need trimming until they age or slow down, but their dew claws should be checked regularly.
Other breeds with nails that grow forward may need trimming more often, even with exercise. Inspect your dog’s nails regularly and trim them when necessary, especially if you notice changes in the sound of their nails on hard floors.
Indoor cats need more frequent trims, while outdoor cats usually wear their nails naturally and require less maintenance.
What happens if my pet’s nails get too long?
If left untrimmed, nails can split, break, or bleed, causing pain or infection in your pet’s feet. Long nails may get caught, tear, or curl back, making walking painful. Cats retract their claws, but they still need regular trims, especially if they don’t naturally wear them down.
Untrimmed nails can pierce the paw pad, leading to infection and pain. Regular checks and trims, at least once a month, prevent this. If you accidentally cut the quick, press the nail into soap to stop the bleeding.
