Protecting your pet from heartworm

Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease that affects dogs, cats, and other mammals.

The disease is caused by a parasitic worm that lives in the heart and blood vessels, causing damage to the heart, lungs, and other organs. The most concerning thing about heartworm is that it’s transmitted to pets through the bite of an infected mosquito. This means that any pet that goes outdoors, even for just a few minutes a day, is at risk of contracting the disease.

Symptoms of heartworm infection can include coughing, fatigue, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. However, many pets may not show symptoms until the disease is in its advanced stages.

The good news is that heartworm can be prevented with regular medication. We can advise on the best preventative options for your pets. It’s important to note that heartworm preventatives don’t kill adult worms, they only prevent the immature worms from maturing. Therefore, if your pet is already infected with adult heartworms, it may require treatment.

Another important point to consider is that heartworm preventatives only protect against heartworm, they don’t protect against other types of worms or parasites. Therefore, you’ll also need additional types of parasite control methods, such as for fleas and ticks.

You can protect your pet from heartworm by giving them a monthly preventative medication. By being aware of the risks and taking preventive measures, you can help ensure the health and well-being of your beloved companion.

As a reminder, please schedule an appointment for a heartworm test and discuss any concerns or questions you may have about heartworm prevention for your pet.
